SpaceX SuperDraco Thruster Firing

  • Published on 4 years ago

    Runtime: 0:35

SpaceX has completed qualification testing for the SuperDraco thruster, an engine that will power the Dragon spacecraft's launch escape system and enable the vehicle to land propulsively on Earth or another planet with pinpoint accuracy.

The SuperDraco is an advanced version of the Draco engines currently used by SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft to maneuver in orbit and during re-entry. SuperDracos will be used on the crew version of the Dragon spacecraft as part of the vehicle's launch escape system; they will also enable propulsive landing on land. Each SuperDraco produces 16,000 pounds of thrust and can be restarted multiple times if necessary. In addition, the engines have the ability to deep throttle, providing astronauts with precise control and enormous power.

The qualification testing program took place over the last month at SpaceX's Rocket Development Facility in McGregor, Texas. The program included testing across a variety of conditions including multiple starts, extended firing durations and extreme off-nominal propellant flow and temperatures.

Mach Diamonds!? but its firing at its operating altitude?... So maybe a bit over expanded, but still a good test

william Greene
william Greene

+thenightwatch001 You can see that at full throttle it isn't over-expanded. When it's throttled down to 20%+ It has a lot less gas coming out, so it appears (and actually is) over-expanded because they can't make the nozzle smaller in response to throttle. It's just physics.

Year ago
Jonah Beale
Jonah Beale

If you look closely you can see the flame is separated from the inside of the nozzle. I think it's over-expanded because in a non emergency (not being used for launch escape) it will be operated in space. Edit: I forgot that this engine's primary purpose is landing... so I'm not sure.

How is the thrust and direction controlled on these rockets?  Is it all electronic, are their any moving parts like valves and stuff?  I have no idea how rocket fuel is ignited or burns.

In the case of this engine, the valves are the only moving parts. Most engines however, use turbopumps to pump the fuel into the combustion chamber.

Sarge Rho

+Enzo Piacitelli I don't remember where I read it. Aside of the nuke however, there are two other ways to reduce fallout, one I have already mentioned: Converting the launch site into a giant armor plate, and the other is launching from the south pole. Without the latter, it's estimated that each Orion launch would cause one additional case of cancer globally.

Ambient Morality

+Sarge Rho Source? I have never heard of a low-fallout yield nuclear weapon.

Sarge Rho
Sarge Rho

+Enzo Piacitelli Actually no. Nuclear weapons are built to produce fallout, but you can build nukes that produce next to no fallout. Paving over the launch area with concrete or metal completely eliminates the fallout. Additionally, Orion pulse units don't produce significant EMPs.

Is it just me or was there some serious pogo going on there?

1sorryham

There was no pogo, just vibration screwing up the CCD camera's video feed and making the image kind of wobble or jump up and down slightly.   The engine was being dynamically throttled rapidly during the test, which will be a requirement for landing the Dragon V2 spacecraft under the power of the SuperDraco engines.

... and helium is inert, just like how we use nitrogen (also inert), as a gas to pressurize spray cans like paint, deoderant.  Pressurized helium tanks force the two chemicals together in the combustion chamber, it's a chemical reaction, and self ignites.  Also, hydrogen and oxygen are typically only used in a launch situation due to the need for cryogenic storage.   They only need to be stored for a short while before and during launch.  They cannot easily be stored for missions lasting days, weeks, months, etc. where hypergolics are stable storable propellants.

Jonathan Hughes
Jonathan Hughes

Helium is inert and thus almost totally useless as fuel (except as simple pressurized reaction mass) but VERY good as a displacer gas for maintaining pressure. See above post.

Carolyn
Carolyn

It uses hydrazine (& N2O4) as fuel, with pressurized helium providing the pressure to feed the fuel to the engine.  It's been used in the past because, well, it works and is reliable.  The fuel is hypergolic (meaning it needs no external ignition source) and it stores easily at room-temperature (so that it doesn't boil-off over the course of a long space flight).
