Can someone help me with where I'm getting lost. I've heard a few times throughout the video the satellite will be in geostationary orbit. At the equator that's roughly 35,800 km for the center of the earth. If the Earth's diameter is 12,800 km, and the altitude on the video indicates 1,150 km (I'm assuming that's mean sea level), that puts the satellite at 13,950 km. Is the satellite itself designed to increase it's altitude by 21,850 km? I'm thinking I might be missing something simple, but can't think of what.

I don't understand why they are deploying it at about 1000km of hight while telling the sattelite will be on a geostationary orbit?? As far as I know, the geostationary orbit is at about 36.000km! Does it coast till there or how does this work out?

Joachim Voldseth
Joachim Voldseth

The final destination for the satelitt will be a geostationary orbit, but SpaceX flies it to a geotransfer orbit which has an apogee of around of over 36 000 km and a low perigee. The satelite itself will cicularize the orbit and position itself in the correct place.

Very inspirational stuff. These propulsive rocket landings have really inspired me. I've been staying up late for weeks trying to reproduce this in Kerbal Space Program! Shortly I'll have an implementation of the G-FOLD algorithm which SpaceX/NASA employees developed and use to compute the minimum fuel trajectory to land. I've had to learn a whole new field of mathematics to do this. http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.208.2033&rep=rep1&type=pdf. I shall use kRPC to interface to KSP for Python.

Dear SpaceX you really need to sort out the loss of feed on these drone ships. I appreciate its not your priority, but your team is pretty damn good at everything else this seems like a minor fix to be honest. Stick the sat dish on its own drone platform tethered 20-30 m away from the main drone ship.

I was so privileged to see this taking off - not from KSC unfortunately (I’d visited there the day before and seen the pad being prepped but wasn’t able to get back to the area for launch), but from Davenport, around an hours drive away. Still an amazing site especially while watching the live stream in tandem! Love everything SpaceX is doing :)

Can we get some better footage of these launches? Don't get me wrong they're amazing as is, but some major blockbuster level stuff would make these appear as epic as they really are to the masses - close up fly by drone shots of the launches and then dramatic moving camera shots for the landings? Surely this wouldn't be that hard to do - surely it could be automated. Well done on another beautiful landing of an orbit class booster =)

Seems like they are having frequent issues with video feed on almost every launches. I get it.. It's hard to manage to get a live video of a huge rocket which is finding its way to land, but still, since past few launches, there have been a lot of downlinks. I mean cmon who we kiddin. Most people come here just to see the First Stage roaring out of the cloud while just calmly landing on the droneship.

No the feed on the RTLS ( land-landings ) is always flawless due to being able to use land lines. Nothing practical that can be done to maintain signal from a ship 300 miles in the Atlantic ocean with a 15 story rocket landing on it.

This was the first launch of any kind I've seen in person. It was an incredible experience and I felt joy I imagine the SpaceX folks felt the first time the first stage landed successfully. Stitched some music onto the SpaceX footage from that first landing the night it went down and I rewatch it from time to time. Such an inspiring event. Enjoy and keep up the amazing work all! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmUIg0roXWE&t=43s
