I was a BUSBOY in the 80's. I worked one night a week, and was supposed to get 10% of the tips (I believe some waitresses stiffed me, but try to prove it). I made $2 an hour on the clock...and I seldom walked out of there with less than $40 in my pocket for working 6 hours. That is north of $8 an hour...in the 80's...at 10% of what the waitresses did. Never, not once did the NYT reporter, who was trying to get an emotional subjective feel, ask what these ladies brought home on an average night. Hint: It isn't $2.13 an hour. It isn't $10 an hour. It probably isn't $20 an hour. But that doesn't support the narrative. This for a job which has ENORMOUSLY flexible hours, no minimum skills except some basic math, a decent memory and the ability to be personable. Except that for these women, being personable is far too much of a burden. Translation: I want your money without having to pretend to be nice.

Regarding the money --The issue is the waiters victimizing themselves, you don't get paid enough you should not work on that. If I am a business and I can not afford to have waiters because I expect my clients to pay my waiters then I should not run a business with them. It is true for many that I know that sometimes waiters do not make enough, but certainly many times a year they make more than minimum wage in tips and this compensates for dry times. So no one put you a gun in your head to be a waiter, the tip is not mandatory by law and can range anything between 1% up to whatever the client feels to. You don't like, dont work as a waiter,,,, end this culture.

I realize that many of those jobs can be physically demanding and downright dangerous, but it would be a great step forward in equality.

What they aren't telling anyone is that even when they are paid $2.13/hour, if they don't make at least minimum wage with the tips for each day, their employer has to pay them the difference, so they ALWAYS make at least minimum wage. But that truth doesn't make for a sad story. I was in the food service industry for nearly 20 years.

When it comes to compensation this generation Coming not us cause in my view we did a horrible job. But this generation just behind me, born after 80. Has to rejuvenate the concept of what's called fair use. Fair use means. The more tasks you ask as an employer the more you got to pay. So we should be paid by the task. A waitress has to 7 or 9 principal tasks. That should be compensated fairly. Sometimes you will see adds for office administration something which has end less tasks plus software. And most of the time we will see 13 to 16 an hour. So these are the things that need change as a person beginning my exit run from the work force. Cause 47. I will say one if the things that would if made a massive difference in my working life. Was just that mandatory pay scales, fair use, and equal work for equal pay. And just frankly raises. And also weekly progress reports. So as to strengthen the case for just that homeboy a raise. But as it stands salaries are too low.

Month ago
ChrisRyot
ChrisRyot

so this is obviously not about tipping. However, instead of blaming men (again), how about raging about the unfair salary situation. I mean 2.13/h? You could pick bananas for twice the money. I must admit I'm not familiar with the US American attitude towards a minimum wage, perhaps that also limits a particular aspect of their freedom and whatever else, but it sure does work in other countries. we do have a minimum wage here so waiters and waitresses don't have to rely on their pretty faces, which is indeed a messed up concept. Anyway, I actually don't agree on the concept of individual tipping and more of a collective tip splitting. It's achieved by all people involved and thus everyone should get a piece of the cake. Perhaps your cooks are paid better, but with a 2.13 salary I doubt it'll be that much more.

I loved being a server, when I was a younger woman. I never minded the $2.13 min wage, because my tips more than made up for it. On occasion, I did have to contend with rude customers. I don't know of a server who hasn't. And I dealt with unruly men by ignoring them. I'd earn my money off good customers, so if I ticked a man off, and he didn't tip me, oh well. Maybe the poor service would cause him not to come back, and mistreat other waitresses. I discussed how to handle rude people with the owner of the restaurant, and he backed me up. Great man! I had a regular customer base who I formed a great relationship with. When I decided to leave the restaurant industry, and start my own cleaning business, several of my old customers hired me to clean their homes. I realize things are different now. People behave much worse than they did back in my day. But if bosses would be like my old boss, and stand behind their servers, when someone gets out of hand, waiting tables for tips would be a much more enjoyable occupation.

I waited in Germany, got 9,50€ an hour, which is not that much, but enough to get by. I was friendly to the customers, but not only for the tip but because they were friendly with me and I wanted to work in a friendly environment. I never felt I had to prostitute myself. Even sometimes, in the rare cases I got a nasty customer, I wouldn't write down the tip, because I didn't want the money of someone that treated me badly.

First I do not understand this custom with tips in the US, somehow is mandatory to tip, here in Europe you tip if you want, and in the Germanic countries the tip is almost non existent. Second, you have maybe hundreds of customers in one week, yes maybe one of them is not the perfect one. when you work with people you will find also that. I sure that there are some sorties when a nice customer has propose something to a waitress an she accepted.

the part about how these servers are being treated by these gross men is messed up and disgusting. but this is misleading in terms of how much servers actually make in the US (i realize that's not the main point of the video but there's some confusion in the comments about how much money servers make). tipping is a pretty odd concept when you think about it but for the most part, it works out in favor of the server and that's why some most servers work in restaurants instead of working retail jobs, you make a lot more money. the wage for a server in my area is $3 an hour but I easily make $100 in 4-5 hours so I'm averaging around $20 an hour in cash which is a lot more than minimum wage and i don't work at a high-end restaurant at all. the most I've made in one night working 6 hours is $350, there aren't a lot of entry-level jobs where that's possible.

Tipping is a good idea for some types of work. If done right, tips provide a little bonus on top of wages to incentivize workers to do a better job than just the bare minimum. The problem is the balance. It needs to be readjusted so that these workers get MOST of their income from wages and tips are just a little extra. Then they could afford to lose the tip if it requires them to sacrifice their self respect.

You are paid for how much you are worth. You can work on whatever you want, and if you don't get the money you want from it it means it is not worth that value. I would abolish the welfare state if I had the chance. I don't want to help people that I don't know or trust or without consent. If smiling is your job, and you hate doing it, then you yourself say that you don't want to be happy. If the welfare state doesn't help me directly that means it is not a public service and if it is not a public service I don't have to pay for it. Of course you feel like garbage if you are one. Nobody restrained you from becoming whatever you want or need but don't expect to get money for the nothingburger you do. I will watch glady when the welfare will collapse, then you will know that the left is the cancer of politics. jk women's opinion were never worth it

I think a better title is, "How Horrible People Hurt Women". I'm for the abolition of tipping in our culture, but most servers oppose it. I think they correctly believe that this will result in lower total yearly wages. Currently at least a portion of their income is in cash a free from payroll and income taxes. Most servers I know will receive tips well in excess of $50 an hour if they work a busy shift. There is a very small chance that most restaurants would offer wages high enough to close that gap, since if the restaurant isn't busy they would be out additional expenses. Instead they would have fewer server on staff, leading to harder work for server and longer wait times for customers. Some servers at less successful establishments would make more, but most will make less. Some of this savings will end up going to those customers who were more generous tippers but the largest beneficiary will be the restaurants that will be able to trade slower service whenever they seek to increase their bottom line.
