    ABOUT JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR LIVE:
From executive producers Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Marc Platt, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron comes NBC's next live musical spectacular, the groundbreaking rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert"! Set during the final week of Jesus' life, the story is told from the perspective of infamous betrayer Judas Iscariot. As more and more followers flock to Jesus, Judas grows concerned that Jesus is becoming arrogant and losing sight of his principles. So when Jesus attacks the money changers in a temple, Judas finally turns on his teacher, setting both on a path to tragedy. Originally conceived as a concept album that hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, the show eventually made its way to the stage in 1971 and garnered five Tony nominations in addition to winning a Drama Desk Award for Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now this globally celebrated classic comes to NBC in 2018 for a one-of-a-kind live staging on Easter Sunday that's sure to amaze with jaw-dropping spectacle, an all-star cast of beloved recording artists and a fresh soundtrack featuring such hits as "Heaven on Their Minds," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar."

Mr. Legend, though a great singer and performer, wasn't perfect for Jesus. When your network eventually does Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, please consider Jeremy Jordan, Johnathan Groff, or Darren Criss, so long as they have the correct range. What I enthusiastically will say for the casting is that you nailed down some of the other roles, including Judas, Caiaphas, Annas, and Pilate, so well done :)

WOW, just some amazing negative comments on this show. this movie saved my life, well actually God did ,after seeing these rock operas, along with the rock opera "GODSPELL" This work here showed me what Jesus suffered, in his last moments of his life. i cry everytime i hear this rock opera and see the movie, with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson. its so moving. i owe my dad, for introducing me to such a great and moving rock opera!! i was a catholic all of my life, but it wasnt until my 20"s when i saw "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Godspell"again, ! then i began to understand what it meant, to be saved and follow Jesus Christ and believe in him, more personally. All of these things combined opened up my life and my heart to Jesus Christ! i saw and heard these 2 rock operas, when i was really young (i was about 8 years old lol), but it was in my 20's when i got the message! Jesus Christ Superstar is so moving especially about 25 minutes to the end! the amount of pain Jesus must have felt on that cross must have been horrible and what he went through. he is truely the savior of the world! Jesus Christ Superstar has shown this to me and i will forever be so grateful. Ted Neeley had the same negative people protesting the movie and the broadway musical, so what did he do? Ted invited them all as his guests and they were moved, by the message of this show. so the negative people on this thread should watch this or even the original movie, just to see how amazing this rock opera really is. hey i hated the sight of clams before i tried them but once i did, i loved them. experience this show and these rock operas before you say anything negative about it. this all i am saying. Peace to all!

I can't even read the comments as some of them just piss me off. 😂 If you don't like it, simply just don't watch it. 🤷‍♀️ I'm 16 and Christian and I don't go to church. I do go to sunrise service though and I have a hard time staying awake. This, this was amazing. It was so interesting and made me stop what I was doing and watch the entire thing. I actually watched it a second time today. I just don't get how people could hate on this cause it makes the younger generation actually interested.

Judas did not "loveeee Jesus", he loved money and betrayed Jesus. Jesus loved Judas, he died for him, but Judas allowed his own guilty sorrow to take hold of him. The bible says it would be better had he not been born, Judas. Because he took justice in his own hands and took his life. Jesus would've bestowed his mercy on Judas too. But this musical. What a disgraceful mockery.

It was very good I was blessed and extremely lucky to see the original play on Broadway back in New York when I was young and purchased the double album before the play outstanding thing original album very first recording when Ian Gillan from Deep Purple played Jesus he had an absolutely magnificent voice and Murray Head and Yvonne Elliman was also in the original cast from the album. So many different genres and shows have come and gone this one tonight was based in today's world without question it was very good excellent singing great music great musicians great acting great dancing. I would have loved to have been there live to see it. It was good to see you in Old Timer and old Legend Alice Cooper out there performing as well.

OK, I gave it a fair shot with an open mind. Gethsemane was the defining monent... and sadly didn't cut muster. I try not to be rude, but honestly, I've sen better College productions with better talent. This production lacked emotion, the vocals were not up to par and an overall disappointment. I guess once You've seen Ted Neely there is just nothing that compares. Gethsemane was luke warm at best. It should have been the show stopper.. but sadly failed.

They don’t even realize who they are portraying in such a disrespectful way. Have they read Matthew 27? The gravity of what happens in that chapter has obviously not been realized by them. Perfection was sacrificed on that cross. The only man who could ever be perfectly good, died because he loved his people. He was beaten and jeered at, spat on and laughed at. And my sins hung him up on that cross. But he loves me anyway; “amazing grace, how sweet the sound”. This belittles what he did, makes it into an entertainment. Kind of like the sick entertainment people got from watching Jesus being crucified, 2000 years ago. There is nothing new under the sun...and this makes me so sad.

I’d like to offer my own perspective as a biblically literate follower of Jesus and BIG fan of the musical. This musical was an important part of my own journey towards becoming a believer. There are two related central questions that “Jesus Christ, Superstar” tries to answer. 1) Why would any follower of Jesus betray him? 2) Who was Jesus, really? More specifically, would the historical person of Jesus agree with the representation that has survived him as reported in the Gospels and in present day Christianity? (“All I really wanna know: Jesus Christ, Superstar, do you think you’re what they say you are?”) Every Storyteller Imports Their Perspective Any time a historian tells a story, the editing process will always in the end reveal the storyteller’s motivations and perspectives. Which parts should you leave in? Which are less important? The Gospel writers themselves had to do this. There is strong evidence in their own writings to suggest that they were all first hand witnesses to the life and ministry of Jesus, and yet they all wrote different accounts of what happened. The differences between these accounts tell you about their motivations in writing them (ie Matthew was probably writing to Jews while Luke had a broader audience in mind; John writes to people who already know the ending of the story so that they might believe). Similarly, any modern day representation of Jesus will have to pick and choose between the four Gospel accounts: what content do you leave in? what will go unused? Even more than that, how should we go about forming extra-biblical perspectives on Jesus that characters like Mary Magdalene or Judas sing about at great length? When Mel Gibson produced “The Passion of the Christ”, he opened with a scene that contained Jesus miraculously healing the ear of a soldier as well a literal Satan character watching. The movie closed with a resurrected Jesus walking from the tomb. The implications left evangelicals (like me) applauding. Yes, Jesus performed miracles. Yes, he rose from the grave. Yes, he is worth following. When John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz wrote “Godspell” and had to represent Jesus, they had John the Baptist introduce him at his baptism as “the way of the Lord”. In “Godspell” he performs no miracles on stage. But instead he does give a significant amount of teaching and is crucified for it. Curiously, Jesus does not resurrect from the dead, but his followers cry “Long live God!”. “Godspell” is definitely a pro-Jesus story. But without the miracles and resurrection, without a heaven’s-eye-view, it takes a very Jesus-was-a-great-teacher-and-worthy-of-following view of its main character. But maybe a Godly perspective isn’t really the point of “Godspell”. The power of “Godspell” is that we fall in love with Jesus, we joyfully join his community, and we are desolated by his crucifixion. Pretty safe for most churches to perform even if it takes a mostly human view of Christ. Who Was Jesus? A Superstar? But “Jesus Christ, Superstar” is different. It is told from the perspective of the skeptic. No miracles. No significant teachings. No bodily resurrection. We do see quite a bit of Jesus’s trial and passion. But we also see parts of the biblical story where, told in isolation, Jesus seems narcissitic (“The poor you’ll have always…Think of me instead”), violent (overturning tables), and powerless (“Heal yourselves!”). More than that, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice gave Judas a skeptic’s perspective and open the show with it. The first words of the whole musical: My mind is clearer now. At last all too well I can see where we all soon will be. If you strip away The myth from the man, You will see where we all soon will be. Jesus! You've started to believe The things they say of you. You really do believe This talk of God is true. And all the good you've done Will soon get swept away. You've begun to matter more Than the things you say. Most revealing is this: Judas thinks that Jesus’s words are getting “twisted-round some other way”. It’s as if Judas is telling us about what Jesus was like before everybody distorted the story. People have long wished to examine a pre-Gospel historical Jesus (Google the “quest for the historical Jesus” or watch “The DaVinci Code”). If you read the Gospels and take a dismissive approach to Jesus’s miracles and interactions with the divine, then you are left with a great teacher whose life probably got embelished by his followers. If you don’t think he’s anything more than a man, you’re left with a pretty self-centered and hyped up nice guy. That’s the thought process of a Jesus skeptic like Judas (or like me as a pre-Christian). Going back to the two big questions that “Jesus Christ, Superstar” tries to answer: 1) Why would any follower of Jesus betray him? Judas doesn’t believe that Jesus is God, and for good reason! The writers of JCS don’t give him (or the audience) any miracles to witness nor is he given any kind of supernatural perspective to help him see otherwise. Furthermore, Judas reports fanaticism and distortion on behalf of the other followers. The Judas of this musical had these reasons to betray Jesus. 2) Who was Jesus, really? In other words, would the historical person of Jesus agree with the representation that has survived him as reported in the Gospels and in present day Christianity? “Do you [Jesus] think you’re what they say you are?” The musical never really gives an explicit answer. Jesus is not portrayed as a liar nor a lunatic, nor does he take any steps to refute the disciple’s claim that he is Lord. The Jesus of JCS is always portrayed as answering the question “Yes, I think I am what they say I am.” John Legend seems to be no different, from the previews. This is all well and good. But the show as a whole illuminates the perspective of the skeptic. It gives us a Jesus that performed no miracles and had plenty of reason to be betrayed. It tells us that the story of Jesus was exaggerated from the start; the writers of the musical wrote in their own evidence that says so. They even replace the resurrection with a song about the disciples longing for their departed leader (“Could we start again, please?”), suggesting the source of the resurrection accounts could’ve come from the disciples need for solace. The musical as a whole tell us that no, Jesus really wasn’t who his followers say he was. When you put it like that, it’s really a wonder that church groups perform it at all! And yet they do. Why?? Why do some Christians still listen to such a doubting message? Moreover, why would a church fund and produce such a production? (as they do every year) What we have in “Jesus Christ, Superstar” is some of the best rock-out music ever to take the stage. Theologically, it helps us sing out what it’s like to be a skeptic. Like a Psalm of lament, it takes us throught doubt. It brings to life the struggle every Christian has with suspicion, confusion, and unbelief. I don’t know if Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice wanted to make a show to critique Christians or to vocalize unbelief. But I’m thankful for this show. I listened to it heavily during a time in my own life when I experienced struggle with unbelief. Back then, I thought that I was listening to it for the awesome music. But only now do I realize that it helped me with the real struggle I had with Jesus. It let me be a skeptic for a season. I can see how people who are threatened by unbelief feel threatened by “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. They feel attacked, confused, or otherwise undermined. But God can handle our unbelief. And God gave us plenty of biblical text to help us express unbelief too; just read the Psalms of lament. I thank God that I came out of that struggle following Jesus. Doubt and unbelief are normal, perhaps even healthy aspects of a living and breathing faith. But it’s not a place to stay for too long. I’m thankful for the musical: it helped me through a difficult time of unbelief at the beginning of my faith journey. But the bigger picture is that I thank God and the people he put in my life who helped me out of unbelief and into a life of wholeness. I am made whole in following Jesus, and “Jesus Christ, Superstar” helped me get there.

Cynthia Haley I didn't say its a mockery because it brings happiness. Its mockey because its adding perspectives to what Jesus Said & what the Gospels say. & btw I don't find Jesus getting beat up & Hung on a Cross entertainment just saying.

BergmannSCH For all those calling this a mockery the same should be said for ALL movies or songs based on Christ because people are entertained by watching those films or listening to those songs. If it brings happiness AND people closer to God I'm all for it.

Genesis 50:20 says ‘You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives’. I have never watched this musical nor I want to. Thanks to God I can feel it’s not right just by watching this video. The funny thing is that the devil can try to deceive many but only God knows, He has the power over every single situation and can turn it for the best. God can use bad things to accomplish greater things. Like He did with you. Satan will always lose, he can try everything he wants but over The Almighty God, he has no power or control at all.

Ultimately, Jesus Christ Superstar is the tragic saga of two men --- condemned to death by forces neither man could control! One death would be of little purpose. The other would change history forever!
