My only question to Elon musk: "If we are to get anywhere in space then we obviously cannot rely on the use of liquid or solid rocket engines, they just can't take us far enough to get anywhere. Because of this this only logical technology would be one which rides itself of the barriers of gravity. Why don't you research such technologies."

What a bucket of bs... Aside from making small GSO staellite launches a bit cheaper, the things Musk say of 'mars colonization' and 'landing everywhere in Solar system' are just PR-gimmics... In his own metaphor, Boeing does not produce and sell one type of aircraft (747 or 787) for all transportation needs... no it deversifies by market needs - 737-500 for shorter frequently flown routes, 737-900 for longer routes with same payload, 767 and 757 for bigger-loads (mostly charters and touristic destinations) etc. I think, despite he may trully believe in this muti-planet mumbo-jumbo, he already realised how much harder it is in real life than in his 'encouraging speeches' - like the dead-born useless Falcon-Heavy... there will be no mars colonization whatsoever, not even in 300 years from today...

Why not take a tiny micro nuclear power plant instead of lots and lots of solar panels you may have to clean off after a sandstorm. The winter lasts quite long on Mars, think of the hibernation of the NASA rovers, you can't have batteries for half a year or they would be really really heavy. A micro nuclear power plant will generate 150MW but will still produce vastly more energy than 30'000 sq meter of solar panel, what is easier to bring to Mars? What weighs less? And the real upside is that modern micro nuclear will produce electricity for 30 years uninterrupted 24/7/365.

Alexander Biersack

With nuclear power you could also do indoor farming to produce food. With abundant energy you can do almost anything you want, also true for down here on earth. We got to stop doing solar and wind and biomass fuels and start doing nuclear on a grand scale.

He’s stolen everything he has from the work already done by American Tax payers over the last 70 years! He can’t even talk! And he has the nerve to ask how something is going to be paid for! He never has to worry about how to pay for anything again! No wonder all his kids come from a test tube! Elon, why don’t you go to Mars? Answer: there’s no where to live there! You’re worried about the price to get there? What about the cost to develop the environment to get there! It’s a good time for you, though, Elon. People in your audience are applauding your wealth! Clearly, they’re not smart enough to understand the real issues! And you talk about heat shield technology! You stole everything from what was already paid for by tax payers! You aren’t fooling anyone that knows the truth - very few people!

Colonize Mars!  What a stupid mission.  4 billion years of evolutionary "shapeshifting" living organisms to the specific influences of a planet 1 AU from the sun against a planet 1.524 AU from the sun. Life formed on our planer which is 12,750 km in diameter vs a planet 6,790 km in diameter, hence 38% of earth's gravity. The atmosphere is 96% Carbon dioxide. Every compound, protein, enzyme, cytokine, every cell and cell division depends on the gravity, rotation, photoperiod and hundreds of factors that ties us to this planet.  Mars cannot be "terraformed" to be earth.

Month ago
Jack Kilmon
Jack Kilmon

There is so much illogical to your response I don't know where to start. First it doesn't address the sound scientific (biological and astrophysical) reasons I give. Second is the poor analogy using Columbus and the Americas as similar. Columbus didn't leave the planet. He was ignorant and didn't know he was not in India. They had all the food they needed by killing the people who had "discovered" the "new world" 14,000 years previous, and stealing their food. In one century 90% of those original native explorers were dead. Third, I have no opposition to NASA's wish to explore Mars. The progress of science is the only hope to forestall anthropogenic extinction along with an end to the greed of conservative politics. The Lunar project resulted in innovations of technology that has driven our economy for four decades. The millions of dollars are spent for the knowledge and the innovations that returns billions for the millions spent. Colonization is not a short time goal. Fourth, the billions should be spent restoring THIS planet, in short terraforming terra.

Month ago
TripleBeatbox
TripleBeatbox

You're like the people back in the 15th century who were sceptical of Columbus. People didn't believe that would achieve anything and anyone who would go with him would just end up dying. See how that turned out. This is simply the next step in humanity's drive and need for exploration. We are curious animals by nature and that's also what allowed us to succeed. Without taking steps like these we'll eventually hit a wall and probably all go extinct the next time an extinction event occurs. NASA now also wants to make the same steps, so I would figure that both SpaceX and NASA would have done significant research to find out whether humans could survive there, and I doubt they would go ahead spending millions of dollars on this if they knew it wouldn't be possible. Unless, you know better than the best-trained Rocket Engineers and Astronomers around?

This is super cool. But if the methods that currently dominate the world in terms of how garabage is disposed of is applied to the colony on Mars, its wont work too well. I mean the Earth has tons of ecosystems, animals and things like the water and carbon cycle that help with excellent ecosystems...and we are destroying those very quickly...so how can we terraform a planet that needs plenty of terraforming if those practices are put in place on Mars...A vivid example is there is so much plastic pollution in large water bodies, that if nothing major is done, then there will be more plastic in those water bodies than fish in a certain amount of years...so take those practices to Mars...if more garabage is generated than healthy biosphere, then terraforming the planet wont happen...the Earth had billions of yrs head start to develop healthy ecosystems, and we still are destroying them quickly...Mars doesn't have any biosphere, and humans will have to do all the terraforming. Unless some tweks are done on how garabage is disposed of on Mars. Im sure they will be...there are tons of experts working on things like this, surely that will be taken into consideration.

I have a serious question about this SpaceX mission. So what are people gonna do on Mars daily? You can't play outside (without a spacesuit at least), watch TV or internet. I assume they can read books and watch movies, but sooner or later you will finish them all or get bored. They also won't experience anything special daily I would assume, so you won't have much to talk about with your fellow Marsdudes. Also, what if they mentally snap and want to get back? Is there even a possibility for that? How would they even do that? Even if they can send people back, they are not gonna send only one person back, it needs to be a big group. And if that happens this mission will fail. Again, this is a serious question. I don't know much about space travel (or any other travel really) and I'm really curious. P.S. What will happen when they meet Marvin? Heard that dude is crazy.

I would definitely buy land either on Mars or on the Moon, Hell why not colonize on the other 7 Earth-like in habitable planets in our solar system that can support life that Hubble telescope found not to long ago?.. I personally think that it would be the best investment then buying anything else on this earth yet alone be able to harvest precious ores and minerals on planets or asteroids especially when it comes to asteroid mining that's something that's going to happen in the future very soon a lot of scientists have been talking about that because there's more resources out in space than there is on this Earth!.. And that's a really true fact!...
