Here I thought gladiator fights were more intense because of the possible death, but it turns out that the UFC and boxing and even pro wrestling to a degree (at least on the scripts for pro wrestling) are exactly like roman gladiator fights! Amazing.

As usual, Adam lies (and doesn’t check every source) to suit his interests. The colosseum was brutal. Hundreds to thousands of animals would die everyday there just for the crowds sadistic pleasures. Entire species and subspecies went extinct (species of lions, bears, rhinos) because the Romans wanted to see one animal fight another. 10,000 men fought in Trajans games and you can bet at the very least half didn’t survive due to death or infected (non-fatal) wounds.

Apparently, adam has never learned about roman history. Gladiators were prisoners of war. (most of them from Greece) Seriously, just ask a historian.

This video could be a little misleading. Arenas were filled with death. They would do things like pit bears against lions and fight mock battles; anything to entertain the blood lust of the crowds. Professional gladiators may have their lives preserved, but that didn't extend to the others that were forced into the arena.

Wait what? Gladiators didn't have no killing rules it was blood sports. The reason why most matches didn't end in death isn't because it was "against the rules" it was because losing a fighter would mean the Emperor would have to incurr more time and resources to seek more men to gather, train, and equip to replace a gladiator killed in battle. As a result, emperors were more merciful to fallen fighters and would often give them another chance to fight and earn redemption and more importantly to save money and time. They were very lucrative sporting events, gladiators who won multiple matches would become celebrities which would attract even more people to watch their favorite fighter, and they were bloody but mostly merciful....mostly.

Wrong! The real rules are if you switch your hand backwards then do the marcerina three times then slap your thcc legs 8 times. Then use the hula hope while juggling fruit. After that Run from one end of the world to the other and say the alphabet backwards. you spare the gladiator and get a 60% off coupon on McDonald's.

This guy is such a tool. Also I've looked into the sources he's used in past content, and quite a few times it was clear that he took things out of context or flat out misconstrued what the sources were concluding. The other annoying thing he does is provide sources that are just shoddy second hand reporting of primary literature. Just link the primary research in the first place, why bother linking some other person's (often wrong) interpretation of the primary literature? It's all just very dishonest.

One in ten matches ending in a death, is NOT exactly "tame."

Month ago
Matthew Belo
Matthew Belo

This is very misleading. A gladiatorial match between a gladiator and a slave or criminal would have always ended in death, and i’m sure the mortality was much higher considering death from infection was a large problem, even for professional gladiators. However, it is true that in matches of gladiator vs gladiator, the object of the match was to subdue rather than kill your enemy. But in the scenario provided in the video (P.O.W. vs. professional gladiator), the gladiator would be given an immense advantage over his/her (yes her) opponent in the form of better weapons, armour, and training... the result of such a scenario was almost always the death of the prisoner. The intent of these games was to entertain, and Roman people saw a gladiatorial tournament without a death as a waste of time.

What adam is saying is completely wrong, the proffesional gladiators would most likely not be killed but the prisoners of war and the criminals that they needed to ditch did get killed and even if they were not killed in battle the romans organised an excecution to excecute all men who were not killed in battle.
