Though it's possible Pocahontas was married to a man named Kocoum, he was killed and she was married to an Englishman, John Rolfe by the time she was around 20. She certainly didn't have a happy ending free of the harsh colonizers.

I feel like this kinda leaves out some important details. First, while it is true that he probably wasn't saved by Pocahontas, his first written account of this was in a letter to the English Queen, in which he urged her to treat Pocahontas with dignity. So, if/when he did make it up, it was to garner support from the Queen. Second, the idea that the Natives were always kind is a lie. While the tribes did eventually helping them with food, they started so late that 80% of the colony was already dead. Not only that, but after a short period of peace, they began mounting regular attacks on the fort in the summer of 1607. These were believed to be caused by expeditions up the river by Captain Newport, but they weren't provoked by some kind of violent conquest of the local tribes like the video seems to believe. Overall, still a great video, but I feel it kind of turns a very turbulent time into a kind of black and white situation.

She also almost never wore clothes, as she was considered a breeder. Most Native American tribes never heard of age of consent and they would start breeding with girls as young as 12. This was common in many cultures, so it's sort of a footnote on history.

Even though they were jerks they had to be in order to survive in the first couple years they lost over half of the population in Jamestown and we're afraid if they did not give him any food it was either them or the natives and some natives did not agree with the leader killed wandering Jamestown colonist before Jamestown started to attack the Indians.

I'm so glad you did an segment on this. One thing that seems to rarely be brought up is that she was raped. Possibly by different people or just one, but she was raped and became pregnant before she married Thomas Rolfe, as stated by Mattaponi oral history. She became so depressed that her captors allowed her sister to visit, and her sister discovered the truth, that she had been raped repeatedly and was possibly pregnant. She married John Rolfe afterwards, but it is doubtful that was his son, since his birthdate was not recorded. I was doing a paper on her and read some unsavory sources from the 1960's, which called the Native Americans 'savages' and the book just repeated John Smith's version of events (and talked about how great he was throughout most of it).

and then she eventually married John Rolfe, a tobacco farmer and developer of a popular new strain, who himself allegedly treated her very well and brought her back to england where she unfortunately succumbed to old world diseases in gravesend at AROUND 20 or 21. HOWEVER, her time in England was very pleasant. She was apparently something of a Celebrity.

Pocahontas was captured and held for ransom by the English during Anglo-Indian hostilities in 1613. During her captivity, she converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca. When the opportunity arose for her to return to her people, she chose to remain with the English. In April 1614, at the age of 17, she married tobacco planter John Rolfe, and in January 1615, bore their son, Thomas Rolfe.[1] In 1616, the Rolfes travelled to London. Pocahontas was presented to English society as an example of the "civilized savage" in hopes of stimulating investment in the Jamestown settlement. She became something of a celebrity, was elegantly fêted, and attended a masque at Whitehall Palace. In 1617, the Rolfes set sail for Virginia, but Pocahontas died at Gravesend of unknown causes, aged around 20-21. She was buried in St George's Church, Gravesend in England, but the exact location of her grave is unknown, as the church has been rebuilt.[1] Numerous places, landmarks, and products in the United States have been named after Pocahontas. Her story has been romanticized over the years, and she is a subject of art, literature, and film. Many famous people have claimed to be among her descendants through her son Thomas, including members of the First Families of Virginia, First LadyEdith Wilson, American Western actor Glenn Strange, Las Vegas performer Wayne Newton, and astronomer Percival Lowell.[7]

If I remember correctly, the original outline for the Disney flick was quite a bit closer to the actual events (though obviously not exactly the same), but the execs were convinced it wouldn't sell and Disney was in desperate need of a massive hit at the time (unlike the super money-making conglomerate of today, they were nearly bankrupt by the end of the '80s). So they upped Pocahontas' age and decided to make it a love story instead of... I dunno, a morality tale?
