I thought Pocahontas married a British man, and they had a son together. Wasn't there a whole lot more to this story? She is the first Native American girl in recorded history to have learned English and went over to England

I had this one annoying classmate who kept saying "JOHN SMITH IS A RAPIST HE RAPED POCAHONTAS, BECAUSE HE TRIED TO DATE A 10 YEAR OLD" even though most of the other people knew that was a lie our teacher confirmed it was a lie, but even time john smith was brought up she said that

the thing about Disney movies is that while they DO base their disney princess's stories in actual historical events or old published books, these are not the "movie" of these events nor books, these are...let's say, different versions or adaptations based on these events/books. Do you know how many adaptitions has the Nutcracker? the little mermaid? cinderella? But Disney's the one with most aundience so people believe they are the only ones with a different version of these stories. Good video btw! i've heard pocahontas' "real story" everywhere and so many times and they are all different and each of them claim to be the actual real one.

Actually I don’t know where you got the gunpowder blowing himself up and the fact that Pocahontas didn’t save him. Because all accounts say that she did and yes she was young but she did protect him. Also Pocahontas married an English man named John Rolfe she even had his child. And she traveled to England as an Indian representative and died there because of disease. Also John Smith was shot in the ankle he didn’t blow himself up. Anyway most of it was right and I love the new animation style. Keep up the great work!

Though it's possible Pocahontas was married to a man named Kocoum, he was killed and she was married to an Englishman, John Rolfe by the time she was around 20. She certainly didn't have a happy ending free of the harsh colonizers.

I feel like this kinda leaves out some important details. First, while it is true that he probably wasn't saved by Pocahontas, his first written account of this was in a letter to the English Queen, in which he urged her to treat Pocahontas with dignity. So, if/when he did make it up, it was to garner support from the Queen. Second, the idea that the Natives were always kind is a lie. While the tribes did eventually helping them with food, they started so late that 80% of the colony was already dead. Not only that, but after a short period of peace, they began mounting regular attacks on the fort in the summer of 1607. These were believed to be caused by expeditions up the river by Captain Newport, but they weren't provoked by some kind of violent conquest of the local tribes like the video seems to believe. Overall, still a great video, but I feel it kind of turns a very turbulent time into a kind of black and white situation.

She also almost never wore clothes, as she was considered a breeder. Most Native American tribes never heard of age of consent and they would start breeding with girls as young as 12. This was common in many cultures, so it's sort of a footnote on history.

Even though they were jerks they had to be in order to survive in the first couple years they lost over half of the population in Jamestown and we're afraid if they did not give him any food it was either them or the natives and some natives did not agree with the leader killed wandering Jamestown colonist before Jamestown started to attack the Indians.

I'm so glad you did an segment on this. One thing that seems to rarely be brought up is that she was raped. Possibly by different people or just one, but she was raped and became pregnant before she married Thomas Rolfe, as stated by Mattaponi oral history. She became so depressed that her captors allowed her sister to visit, and her sister discovered the truth, that she had been raped repeatedly and was possibly pregnant. She married John Rolfe afterwards, but it is doubtful that was his son, since his birthdate was not recorded. I was doing a paper on her and read some unsavory sources from the 1960's, which called the Native Americans 'savages' and the book just repeated John Smith's version of events (and talked about how great he was throughout most of it).
