In America you have Cuban missile crisis *In Soviet Russia you have Turkish Missile Crisis*

Month ago
Endwar1997
Endwar1997

The Soviets likely would have put missiles in Cuba even if the US hadn't put any in Turkey. The USSR was on the losing side of the missile gap in the 60s and desperately needed a way to redress the balance of power. Their ICBM force in 1962 was less than 50 nuclear weapons, their bomber force had 150 nuclear bombs. The US could bring to bear against the USSR homeland 3500 nuclear weapons. In a nuclear war the USSR could potentially cripple the US, but the US could annihilate the USSR from the face of the Earth. The USSR needed more nuclear weapons to counter-balance this, but most of their arsenal didn't have the range to hit the Continental US... unless the nukes were stationed right next to them. For the Soviet Union the choice to put missiles in Cuba was as obvious as it was strategically necessary. The only thing putting nukes in Turkey did was speed up this inevitability. You're not a historian, Adam, and I very much doubt that you have any knowledge about nuclear warfare doctrine. You're not critically analyzing a historical situation, you're playing a game of connect-the-dots. Verify claims with experts in the field before you publish your videos so you stop coming off as a horrendously out-of-touch sensationalist to anyone who has a firm grasp on the topics you comment on.

Hey adam, I really enjoy your video's but I have one slight thing which annoys me after watching your animated videos for quite a while and that is, that the ending of every video is abrupt. The video just suddenly ends. could you perhaps in the future fix that? :D.

Adam, you always take pride in trying to provide accurate facts, but in this episode you couldn't even do a correct placement of a country on the map. You've shown former Yugoslavia as somewhere toward the middle of Europe, not even close to the Adriatic sea, while former Yugoslavia covered most of the East Adriatic coast (which is today Croatia), therefore was a coastal country. I find inaccuracy in maps quite disappointing and very sloppy for a show like this one.

The Cuban missed crisis was not because the us put misses in Turkey. Khrushcev’s Own words on the matter speaks otherwise. He had been facing Cuban backlash after having several ambassadors dispelled from Cuba, and he was facing political problems because of it. He then went on to say that the Soviet Union could not afford to lose face (paraphrasing here) that communism needed to appear to be on the march. But don’t take my word for it do your own research and don’t take it from a poorly drawn cartoon.

Glad we learned that lesson! Nowadays, we'd never place our troop along Russia's borders and bomb their allies and place warships in the Black Sea and do flybys of their fighter jets and try to mess with their elections and then, after all that, accuse them of being aggressors when they try to influence our politics, right?...right?

The U.S. had no idea the Soviets were so behind. Russia kept bullshitting about the amount of nukes they had, America never learned about their Nuclear size until many years later The missiles in Turkey and Italy were old and were planned to be removed anyway. I like the concept of this show but this segment reaks of bias. This wasn't individually Kennedy's fault. Cruchev and Castro also played many parts in this world ending senario. To act like this can all be blamed on one man is ridiculous.

An advertisement for the video says that "Kennedy almost killed us all!" The Eisenhower administration came up with the bay of pigs invasion and planed to put nuclear missiles in a 1959 deal with Turkey. What are kids taught in the US? I'm in the UK and I was taught this and how the USA put missiles in Turkey first, we actually learn that the cold war was not black and white and was a very grey area with no real hero because both sides did silly things like just before the summit meeting in France the USA sent a U2 spy plane in to Russian air space, it was shot down and the US government said it was a weather plane but the Russians knew that was a lie because the pilot was captured alive, so Khrushchev wanted an appoligie at the meeting, he didn't get one so he stormed off. Also I know the Russians did stupid stuff, but I would be hear all day listing the thing the US and USSR did. So my question. Do American kids get taught the one sided story of the cold war, or is it just collage humour who is running out off ideas

As many have said this is a super over simplified version. But what I would want a comment reader to take away is to explore for yourself the political climate in Europe at the time, and overall Soviet/communist aggression. And we didn't want Castro in power and were willing to do anything to get him out. He knew this, and yes he played a part in the missile crisis. Don't watch some other short video, go back and watch Ted Turners 30 part series on the cold war where they interview Kissinger, Castro and all the soviets. It's dangerous to be so careless with history.

Not impressed. This makes it seem as though the crisis was purely our fault. This Cliff Note version of history does not give the whole picture. In reality, the missiles placed in Turkey were put there (1959) to slow or stop Russian expansion into Western Europe of which Turkey was most vulnerable at the time. We didn't just place them there willy nilly. Their eventual removal (1963) was done so in part because they had become obsolete and were replaced by the Polaris. A submarine launched balistic missile.
